My Maria

I just bought my first Christmas crèche ever. It is a mini (and a minimalist) crib, cut out of one flat piece of wood. As I was trying to arrange the figurines on my desk, Maria miraculously kept jumping out. I was trying to push the stubborn figurine back to her husband under the star-clad- roof but she kept sticking out. Somehow, I felt for her….

Maybe I should try to exchange this thing tomorrow. And get one with a Maria glued in.

No. I think you should take matters into your own hand and get a nail and a hammer. I know you can do it. Just put her where her place is!

“If something walks out of your refrigerator, let it go!” Same with Maria, in our todays world she will get divorced from Joseph and be one of many mothers with father-less children… sad story, but true!

I disagree. We have to keep the family intact. If the prime symbol of the family falls apart, the whole world falls apart! Sodom and Gonorrhea! All little girls will throw their princess/barbie/mom-puppets in the trashcan and want one with a pantsuit! They will tell mom they rather want to have a gay couple as fathers and she should go and get a decent job instead so she can afford a pony since all three parents have an income, and the daughters have peace at home…

Few days ago, I had dinner with a bunch of young(er) but very fun and intelligent people. We had a long discussion about the crisis of values in our society – which manifests itself as what we are now experiencing as the economy crisis. We talked a lot about “the family”.
Yes, the trinity – the family – is the source of life and the base for all other values. It not only creates life – it teaches you love, respect, sacrifice, generosity. This is why trinity, or the family, exist in so many other religions – which teach us values.
Only few days ago, I was attacked for being “a feminist who took her clothes off for her book cover” – and here I go again with what sounds like another contradiction: I wish my Maria would (be able to) stay under the roof of her family’s little crib.
