As ridiculous as it may sound, I wish that US voters behaved like nothing has changed. I wish they had the same enthusiasm they had in 2008. Because they still urgently need change, they still urgently need Obama. And this does not mean that Obama hasn’t done his job. In contrary, Obama has done a great job. He proved that he deserves to be elected again. Yes, people are disappointed. People are always disappointed. People were disappointed after every revolution, every election, every change. Every war. (Believe me, I grew up in a country of revolutions, wars, and major political and social changes. Change takes time. And people are always disappointed.) People don’t really know what they want. People want miracles. Miracles do not exist. Not in the world we've built for ourselves.
What Obama has achieved in 4 years was as close to a miracle as you can get. The republicans brought the country (and the whole world) to a verge of an economic collapse. Yes, rich are still getting richer and Wall Street is still blooming. But find a Robin Hood who would be able to change the sociopolitical fist that has been holding the whole world by its balls for decades. One guy? In four years? No bloody revolution? Or war? No way. And yes there are still soldiers in Iraq. Whoever knows the situation there will know that pulling out is just as bad as staying. It is a catch-22 situation. And yes, the unemployment is high, the crisis is still on...
But guys, you did elect an intelligent, altruistic, fair, ambitious, down-to-earth and, look at this change: African-American president! An amazing guy, a guy you can be proud of. And he did save your ass from another great depression. He did pull soldiers out of two wars he inherited from the republicans. He did give people health insurance. And in only one day, this man has completely changed the world’s attitude towards the USA. Do not underestimate the power of this. This WAS a miracle. This was change!
I would view next 4 years as Obama’s actual change years. His last four years were cleaning up the house so that now, he can start getting the real job done. And there’s a lot of work to do (a lot of change yet to happen in his fellow Americans' heads). And anyway, as long as Romney is the only other option, everyone should be screaming of joy and jubilating that there is Obama to vote for. So pull out those stickers and T-shirts from 2008, raise your head high once again and scream CHANGE!
Yes, you can.
